Massey Bros. Funeral Directors invest €500,000 in new premises and state-of-the-art facilities as part of strategy for growth

Third-generation family company opens new branch in Blackrock

Monday 23rd May 2016: One of Dublin’s longest established funeral directors has signalled plans to significantly expand its business over the next five years with an initial €500,000 investment in new premises and state-of-the-art facilities.

The third-generation family business today opened a new branch in Blackrock, bringing its total branch network to ten.  And, as part of its wider expansion strategy, the company has also refurbished its funeral home in Dublin’s Thomas Street and created a state-of-the-art mortuary facility at its Cork Street premises.

Speaking at the opening of the new branch at Newtown Park, Blackrock, managing director Freddie Maguire said that the company has ambitious plans to bring new products and service to market over the next 24-months, as well as open a number of new branches in key locations around Dublin city and county over the next five years, both of which have the potential to create up to 15 new jobs.

“Massey Bros. is a growing business, evidenced by the fact that we now arrange approximately one-in-four of all funerals in the areas in which we have a presence,” said Freddie Maguire.

“The service we offer is one that enables families to honour the lives of their loved ones.  To do that in a meaningful way, we have to be innovative, particularly as today there is no such thing as a ‘standard’ funeral.  Over the last number of years we have developed a range of new products and services such as a Harley-Davidson hearse, spaces for civil funerals and pre-paid international repatriation funeral plans helping us to reach a far wider target audience and deliver steady and consistent market share growth.

“Massey Bros. has always been about serving the local community – that ethos is something that has stood the test of time for the business and is something that we replicate in all of the areas in which we have a presence.  The importance of family is also something that has stayed with us – family taking care of family – ours always has been a family business and, I hope, always will be.

“Blackrock is a strategic location for us, not least because it is an area that we, as a family, have had a long association with.  And, we consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to serve the people of the south county Dublin area.”

Massey Bros. is the original ‘Massey’ funeral provider in Dublin and was established in the Liberties by the current managing director Freddie Maguire’s mother – Cissy Maguire (née Massey) – in the 1930s.  And, despite being perceived to be a male dominated industry, the female influence continues to be very much in evidence today as half of the company’s board members and employees are female and seven of the company’s ten funeral homes are managed by women.

The company’s new branch at Newtown Park, Blackrock comprises a space in which families may hold a ceremony of their choice; a Skype facility so that mourners living overseas may attend a funeral via the internet; two chapels of rest; and a small garden of reflection.

Funeral costs: is it time to plan ahead?

You may not wish to stop for death, but as Emily Dickinson once so eloquently put it, it will kindly stop for you.

Yes, our demise is one of the few certainties in life. And yet so many of us do our very best to avoid all thoughts of death, dying or funerals.

This was Valerie Vetter’s experience some years ago when she lost both her parents. “When my parents died, I was very unprepared for it,” she says, recalling a visit to a funeral director which completely passed her by.

“I couldn’t take in what he was telling me; I found it just too hard,” she says.

So why don’t we take some time ahead of the eventuality – either on our own behalf or for our nearest and dearest – to do a bit of research and planning?

Well, as Vetter says, “we’re all in denial”.

But if you want move past the denial and accept the inevitable, what do you need to know?

Managing a funeral home can be quite an undertaking

Managing a funeral home can be quite an undertaking, but with thousands of people depending on their service each day there is no doubt that the funeral business is a vital amenity in our society.
This week, The Gazette caught up with Ann Bradley, manager of Massey Bros funeral home in Crumlin – The Haven, to see what a day in her life is like.

Massey Bros Funeral Homes Charity Concert

Friends of Hope Choir - Massey Bros Funeral Homes Community Charity

The Friends of Hope Choir’s “Community Care Foundation Christmas Concert” took place on December 14th in St. Anthony’s Church, Clontarf. Masseys Bros. were delighted to present such a wonderful evening and the concert was a great success. Through a combination of ticket sales and raffle ticket sales, we were able to make a significant contribution to our registered charity “The Community Care Foundation”, which helps families in the communities where we are based, who are struggling financially, especially over the holidays.

Massey Bros. Funeral Directors join forces with Insurances & Financial Services Ltd. to launch Ireland’s first funeral plan which also allows for bequests.

PrePaid Funerals

Product aims to enable people whose investments have been decimated by the downturn to cover the cost of their funeral and still provide for loved ones in their will.

Today sees the launch of an innovative new insurance based funeral plan from Massey Bros. Funeral Directors which also allows policy holders to include a legacy for a loved one as part of the sum assured.

The plan is the latest collaboration between Massey Bros. Funeral Directors and Insurances & Financial Services Ltd. and has been created to assist the large number of people in Ireland who have saved diligently over the years for their funeral only to see the value of their investments decimated by the economic downturn.

Massey Bros. believe that this solution will appeal most to people who are aged 50-plus. “We are seeing increasing numbers of people take care of their own funeral arrangements well in advance of their passing, mainly to remove the financial and emotional burden from their loved ones,” said Peter Maguire of Massey Bros.

“We are aware of many people who have had their hopes of being able to leave their children or other loved ones a sum of money on their passing dashed by the economic downturn, perhaps because they had invested their savings in shares or property. Having seen the peace of mind a pre-paid funeral plan can bring to people concerned about being able to meet future funeral expenses, we set about exploring the possibility of developing a plan that would also allow for an additional sum of money which could be used as a bequest.

“Parents in particular take great comfort in knowing that their children will not be left with a financial burden on their passing. It must be extremely distressing to suddenly be in a position whereby their best efforts have been eroded away and being faced with the reality of not being able to rebuild their nest-egg through savings alone.

“Having already developed an insurance based international repatriation plan with Insurances & Financial Services Ltd. for people who have made Ireland their home but who, on their passing, would like to have their remains returned to the place of their birth, we felt we had the perfect basis for a domestic product, particularly as the international plan already allows for the provision of an additional sum of money to pay for loved ones to travel with the remains.

“While every person’s requirements and circumstances are looked at individually, the average non-smoker who is 60 at their next birthday could take out a policy valued at €10,000 (index linked) which would more than cover their funeral costs for as little as €22.50 per month. Increase that to €50,000 to allow for a bequest and the premium would likely be in the region of €103.00 per month. This is subject to proposal and acceptance. So it very often makes sense to take out life cover, rather than saving, as we never know when we will pass away and often is it far sooner than expected leaving little time for savings to build.”

Gerard Downey of Insurances & Financial Services Ltd said that this product had been more than a year in the planning to make sure that it had the right level of flexibility to meet a wide range of personal and financial needs. “We are pleased to be able to partner with Massey Bros. to create yet another unique and bespoke insurance based plan which will meet the needs of people who are concerned about being able to meet their funeral costs and look after their families beyond their own lifetime,” he said.

The Massey Bros. funeral plan is available to people who at the time of application are aged up to 80 years at their next birthday and is subject to terms and conditions. It requires payment of a monthly premium which is determined by the insurer based on individual circumstances. The cover provided is on a Whole of Life basis where the premium and benefit are guaranteed for the whole of the insured’s life. A legal agreement ensuring that Massey Bros. carry out the wishes of the policy holder i.e. arrange the funeral of their choice is also signed which includes a commitment from Massey Bros. to return any surplus from the amount paid by the insurance company to the estate of the deceased. The legacy portion of the insured sum is covered by a separate legal agreement assigning the amount directly to the estate of the deceased or a named individual. The Insurance Broker, Insurances & Financial Services Ltd. and any insurance company/product provider chosen are regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. The Terms of Business from the Broker and the Terms and Conditions of the policy will be issued with every quotation requested in advance of commencement of any Life Assurance Plan/Funeral Plan.

International Funeral Repatriation Explained

Are you among the thousands of people who have made Ireland your home? If so, have you considered an international repatriation plan?

On an ongoing basis, we speak with clients who have made Ireland their home and who, on their passing, would like their remains to be returned to the place of their birth.

You would be forgiven for thinking that this would be a hugely complicated and expensive thing to do, but, it is easier to arrange in advance and pay for than you might think.

Last year, Massey Bros. launched Ireland’s only Funeral Insurance Plan aimed at the growing number of people from overseas who would like to return home on their passing but who are concerned about the level of cost involved and the burden that would place on their families.

The plan is offered in partnership with Insurances & Financial Services Ltd., Insurance & Financial Brokers and can be tailored to ensure that sufficient funds are available to cover the cost of repatriation to any country in the world.

It has been designed not just to ensure that the funds are available to pay for the repatriation, but also to take care of the arrangements for the family. Additionally, there is the option to include provision for local funeral costs and the cost of airfares for family members so that they can travel home with the deceased and attend their ‘local’ funeral too. Should the death benefit paid out be in excess of the actual cost of repatriation, Massey Bros. will return the balance of funds to the estate of the deceased.

The cost of an insurance based international repatriation plan depends on a number of things including the circumstances of the individual and the country to which they would like their remains to be sent. However, the vast majority of people should be able to avail of a plan from as little as €10.00 per month plus the government levy of 10c per month. The exact cost will be calculated by the Broker once you have agreed your chosen funeral arrangements with one of our Repatriation Consultants.

Poems for Civil or Non-Religious Funerals

Our role is to help families create a funeral ceremony that honours the life of their loved one in a way that fully reflects and respects their wishes and beliefs.

Civil or non-religious funerals can be held in any location, with our without the assistance of a civil celebrant. They may follow any format and can contain poems, songs, music or a reading from a favourite book. Family members and friends are free to take part in whatever way the family would like.

We have put together a collection of poems suitable for civil or non-religious funerals. Poetry, in particular, is often used to reflect thoughts and emotions and can be a meaningful way for a family member of friend to take part in the ceremony.

Farewell My Friends

Rabindranath Tagore

Farewell My Friends
It was beautiful
As long as it lasted
The journey of my life.
I have no regrets
Whatsoever said
The pain I’ll leave behind.
Those dear hearts
Who love and care…
And the strings pulling
At the heart and soul…
The strong arms
That held me up
When my own strength
Let me down.
At the turning of my life
I came across
Good friends,
Friends who stood by me
Even when time raced me by.
Farewell, farewell My friends
I smile and
Bid you goodbye.
No, shed no tears
For I need them not
All I need is your smile.
If you feel sad
Do think of me
For that’s what I’ll like
When you live in the hearts
Of those you love
Remember then
You never die.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep

Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep,
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the Diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle Autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quite birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die

Afterglow

Helen Lowrie Marshall

I’d like the memory of me
To be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow
Of smiles when day is done.
I’d like to leave an echo
Whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
And bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve,
To dry before the sun
Of happy memories that I leave
When life is done.

(S)He is gone

David Harkin

You can shed tears that (s)he is gone
Or you can smile because (s)he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that (s)he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that (s)he has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see (her) him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him and only that (s)he is gone
Or you can cherish (her) his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
Be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he would want:
Ssmile, open your eyes, love and go on.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree

W. B. Yeats

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee;
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping
slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket
sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

The Day You Left

Anon

With tears we saw you suffer,
As we watched you fade away,
Our hearts were almost broken,
As you fought so hard to stay.

We knew you had to leave us,
But you never went alone,
For part of us went with you
The day you left your home.

The Road Not Taken

Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Funeral Blues

W.H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

(Note: some families choose not to read the final verse at funerals).

The Parting Glass

Irish Traditional Song

Oh all the time that e’er I spent,
I spent it in good company;
And any harm that e’er I’ve done,
I trust it was to none but me;
May those I’ve loved through all the years
Have memories now they’ll e’er recall;
So fill me to the parting glass,
Goodnight, and joy be with you all.

Oh all the comrades that e’er I had,
Are sorry for my going away;
And all the loved ones that e’er I had
Would wish me one more day to stay.
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should leave and you should not,
I’ll gently rise and I’ll softly call
Goodnight, and joy be with you all.

Of all good times that e’er we shared,
I leave to you fond memory;
And for all the friendship that e’er we had
I ask you to remember me;
And when you sit and stories tell,
I’ll be with you and help recall;
So fill to me the parting glass,
God bless, and joy be with you all.

Promises

by David Chadwick Rites of Passage

You promised me you’d always be there.
You sat there, in that chair and promised me.
Large as life, ebullient, robust;
they were the words that sealed your promise
You stood by the shore
As we laughed and squealed with delight as
you picked up rocks and tossed them with ease
Splashing us with expectations of your invincibility.
You were invincible. weren’t you Daddy?
Or was it just a trick of time
That made me believe that you could live forever?

We Remember Them

Sylvan Kamens & Rabbi Jack Riemer

At the rising sun and at its going down; We remember them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter; We remember them.
At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring; We remember them.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer; We remember them.
At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of the autumn; We remember them.
At the beginning of the year and when it ends; We remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as We remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength; We remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart; We remember them.
When we have decisions that are difficult to make; We remember them.
When we have joy we crave to share; We remember them.
When we have achievements that are based on theirs; We remember them.
For as long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as, We remember them.
