Thinking Ahead – A Guide to Prepaid Funerals

A Guide to PrePaid Funeral Plans

Ask yourself a question: If you could attend your own funeral, what would it be like?  Up until recently, that is something most of us would never have dared or wanted to ask.  However, recent television programmes and media coverage, as well as the Irish Hospice Foundation’s ‘Think Ahead’ initiative, have started a national conversation on just that – thinking ahead.

Massey Bros. have been helping people to think ahead for generations and, to help you consider your options, we have produced a new booklet which explains the choices available to you.  To download a copy, simply click here.

So, what does thinking ahead involve?

Basically, two things:

  • Deciding what you would like to happen at your funeral

and

  • Protecting your loved ones against rising funeral costs

Deciding what you would like to happen at your funeral is the starting point.

Anything is possible, including a funeral overseas or one that takes place somewhere other than in a place of worship or crematorium.  We have listed below some of the key things you need to consider, remembering that all the time, the choice is yours:

  • Where would you like your funeral to take place?
  • Would you like your favourite hymns, music, readings or poetry to be included?
  • Who would you like to take part in your funeral service and what would you like them to do?
  • Would you like your remains to be buried or cremated?
  • If you opt for a burial, where would you like that to take place?
  • What type of coffin would you like?
  • What kind of hearse would you like?
  • What kind of flowers would you like?
  • How would you like your loved ones to travel to your funeral?
  • Would you like people to make a donation to charity in your memory?

Protecting your loved ones against rising funeral costs is the second key consideration.

Traditionally, people have been able to do this by making a once-off payment for the funeral of their choice at today’s prices, protecting loved ones against future cost increases which, as shown below, can be considerable when taken over several years:

The average total cost of a funeral has risen from €4,000 in 1999 to €7,000 in 2013.  Had you put your €4,000 in a simple bank, building society or credit union deposit account in 1999, by 2013 it would have grown to approximately €5,000, well short of what might be required.

Because we know that it is not always possible to make a once-off payment, we have partnered with Insurances & Financial Services Ltd to create a new affordable insurance-based funeral plan which allows you to make monthly premium payments – the first plan of its kind in Ireland.

While this new plan still lets you plan the funeral of your choice, it also allows you to leave an extra sum of money to loved ones or to cover other expenses if you would like.

We are here to help you take care of every detail. To find out more, please contact your local Massey Bros. funeral home.

Deciding to plan your own funeral is the most thoughtful decision you could ever make.

Founders of the Community Care Foundation and Paul English said that they are overwhelmed by the level of support which singers and musicians from across Dublin have given to the charity.  “Without the commitment and enthusiasm of the staff of Massey Bros. funerals and the professional singers and musicians involved we would not be in a position to be able to put together such an ambitious series of concerts,” they said.

“Little did we think three years ago when we set up the charity that we would be performing in front of thousands of people raising funds for families in need. The money raised to date has benefitted people who are experiencing unimaginable difficulty and for many it has literally changed their lives.”

The Community Care Foundation is a registered charity which was established in 2010 by the staff of Massey Bros. Funeral Directors. This is the fifth series of concerts the charity has held to date.

Massey Brothers Funeral Homes Dublin

Statement from Massey Bros. Funeral Directors in respect of the announcement that the Bereavement Grant is to be discontinued

Managing director of Massey Bros. Funeral Directors Freddie Maguire said that he was dismayed by today’s announcement that the Bereavement Grant is to be discontinued in respect of deaths on or after 1 January 2014.  “More than 70% of the families we care for are eligible for the Bereavement Grant which contributes €850 towards the cost of a funeral for their loved one.  Families coming to terms with the death of a loved one are trying to cope with a range of emotional and practical issues and money is one of them.  Discontinuing the Bereavement Grant will only serve to add to their burden and is a cynical move given that those who were eligible only qualified because they had paid their PRSI contributions.”

International repatriation plan launch

Massey Bros. launch Ireland’s first international repatriation plan

Today sees the launch of Ireland’s first insurance plan aimed at the growing number of people from overseas who have made Ireland their home but who, on their passing, would like their remains to be returned to their place of birth.

The plan is the result of collaboration between one of Ireland’s longest established funeral directors Massey Bros. and Insurances & Financial Services Ltd., Insurance Brokers and can be tailored to ensure that sufficient funds are available to cover the cost of repatriation to any country in the world.

Peter Maguire, Business Manager, Massey Bros. said that Ireland has seen a massive growth in the number of people who have made it their home which has been mirrored by the number of enquiries they have had about the repatriation of loved ones, particularly to countries such as Poland, Nigeria and Brazil.  “Our experience is that an increasing number of people would like to be able to be returned home on their passing, but are concerned about the level of cost involved and the burden that would place on their families,” he said.

“The vast majority of people should be able to avail of the repatriation plan for as little as €10.00 per month plus the government levy of 10c per month.  We have long been offering ‘pre-paid’ funeral plans to people in Ireland for funerals in Ireland, so extending this to cover international repatriation seemed to us to be a natural progression, particularly as we have specialist experience in this area.

“International repatriation can be both complex and costly.  Our plan, which caters for people right across Ireland, has been designed not just to ensure that the funds are available to pay for the repatriation, but also that the arrangements are taken care of for the family.  There is also the option to include provision for local funeral costs and the cost of airfares for family members so that they can also travel home with the deceased and attend their ‘local’ funeral.”

Gerard Downey of Insurances & Financial Services Ltd, said that this is a unique opportunity to partner with a funeral director to develop what is a tailor made insurance based arrangement.  “The approach Massey Bros. has taken is about making sure that families are looked after in the best way possible.  We have spent many months working together developing this plan which is based on a life assurance policy.  This has involved researching the cost of repatriation which today ranges from €3,400 for the UK to €4,700 if you were to repatriate remains to a remote island in the Pacific Ocean.  Price increases – including the rising cost of oil – have also been factored in.

“The wonderful thing about this policy is its flexibility to cover the specific requirements of each client.  In addition to the funeral and repatriation costs, the death benefit can also be increased to include expenses incurred by the family of the deceased such as airfares or a local funeral.  Should the death benefit paid out be in excess of the actual cost of repatriation, Massey Bros. will return the balance of funds to the estate of the deceased.”

The international repatriation plan is available to people who at the time of application are aged up to 80 years at their next birthday and is subject to terms and conditions.  It requires payment of a monthly premium which is determined by the insurer based on individual circumstances.  A legal agreement ensuring that Massey Bros. carry out the wishes of the policy holder i.e. repatriate their remains to their chosen country is also signed which includes a commitment from Massey Bros. to return any surplus from the amount paid by the insurance company to the estate of the deceased.  The Insurance Broker, Insurances & Financial Services Ltd. and any insurance company/product provider chosen are regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.  The Terms of Business from the Broker and the Terms and Conditions of the policy will be issued with every quotation requested in advance of commencement of any Life Assurance Plan/Repatriation Agreement.

Launch of The Haven

Lord Mayor of Dublin opens ‘The Haven’ civil and religious funeral ceremony venue

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mr. Naoise Ó Muirí today performed the official opening of ‘The Haven’ – the new premises of Massey Bros., one of Ireland’s longest established funeral directors with ten branches across Dublin.  The Haven is Ireland’s first venue designed specifically to host civil and religious funeral services, bringing a new level of choice to families considering where to hold a funeral for a loved one.

The premises, located at 177 Crumlin Road, Dublin 12, are the result of an investment of €150,000 to refurbish the interior of the building and install the latest audio-visual and internet technology.  By doing so, The Haven will also cater for families with members and friends living overseas.  Through the use of internet technology, people living elsewhere in Ireland or in any other country in the world will be able to attend a funeral ‘virtually’ via Skype by logging onto Massey Bangor-Drv.

Freddie Maguire, managing director, Massey Bros. said that over the past number of years requests for choice have increased.  “What we have really created is a blank canvas which families can use to reflect their loved one in whatever way they feel is appropriate.  This could be creating a theme around a sporting interest or hobby or simply holding a funeral ceremony in the middle of the night so that relatives in Australia or New Zealand can be a part of it via the internet.

“In our experience the funeral industry is about five years behind the wedding industry.  We know that in 2009 almost half of people marrying in Dublin City married in civil ceremonies.  Already, we are seeing approximately ten per cent of the families we look after requesting civil funerals for their loved ones.

“The last census showed that the number of people in Ireland with no religious affiliation had increased by 45 per cent to almost 270,000 people.  It is important to us that they have a place in which they can mark the passing of a loved one in a dignified and respectful manner.

“We also know that the majority of families in Ireland now have at least one member living overseas.  That is in addition to the large number of people from overseas who have made Ireland their home.  It is not always possible for people to get home quickly to attend a funeral so we made the decision to invest in technology which would allow for people to be present via the internet.”

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mr. Naoise Ó Muirí said that the significant investment made into these premises not only reflected the continued commitment of Massey Bros. to the people of Dublin, but also demonstrated their desire to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse society.

“Three generations of the Massy Bros. family have dedicated themselves to caring for families at what is an exceptionally difficult time in their lives.  Their primary concern is enabling people to honour the lives of their loved ones in whatever way is appropriate.  This investment is a testament to that and ensures that each and every member of our society has a space which they can make their own to do just that.

“It is so important to those who have been bereaved to have the support of family, friends and colleagues.  For those whose family and friends live overseas, the ability through technology to have them pay their respects and attend a funeral from wherever they might be in the world will, I know, provide huge comfort.”

The Haven is available to families for religious or civil services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  It is able to accommodate up to 55 mourners as well as countless others via the internet.  Families are able to customise The Haven to reflect the interests of their loved one and are free to use the audio-visual system to play music and display pictures and photographs.
