Update on ease of Government restrictions on funeral services, as of Monday 6th September

Numbers attending funerals

From Monday 6th September 2021, all funeral venues (including churches, crematoria and other venues) can accommodate 50% of their usual capacity – this will, obviously, vary depending on the venue and our funeral directors will confirm exact capacities with the venues.

Reposings/Wakes

The 50% capacity rule also applies to funeral homes/chapels of repose. However, the Irish Association of Funeral Directors is advising its members to take a cautious approach to the re-introduction of public wakes at their premises. From a practical point of view, it may be difficult to manage the numbers attending a funeral home and to prevent an unsafe situation from developing. Families should consider continuing with private reposings for family only or by family invitation instead.

The following safety guidelines should continue to be followed;

  • Mask-wearing in all indoor settings
  • Physical distancing
  • No hand-shaking
  • No condolence books
  • Provision of hand sanitiser
  • Use of directional and safety signage
  • One-way systems in funeral homes where possible
  • Regular hand-washing, coughing & sneezing etiquette and surface sanitising

Finglas Memories – Through our eyes – The Local News

Finglas Man Tom Bruen started Finglas Memories Facebook page in 2017. A Finglas man now living with his family in Australia, set up the page to encourage Finglas people to record their memories, share photos and relive their childhood. Indeed a successful by-product of the page has been its ability to reconnect old friends, lovers and even relations. Earlier this year Tom set about putting as many of these memories in a book which has been released just a short while ago.

The book has become like gold dust, with probably Massey Bros Funeral Home being the only place I could get a copy. It is a wonderful collection of memories with an introduction by Brendan O’Carroll, entries by famous footballer Ronnie Whelan, author George Fitzgerald, and Michael Doyle. But it is not about important people in our community. It is by and about locals from Finglas, some have left the area, many still live here, but all have great memories of growing up in Finglas throughout the years.

Update on ease of Government restrictions on funeral services

Update on ease of Government restrictions on funeral services, as of Monday 10th May.

  • Unfortunately, it is still not possible to have a large funeral as we still navigate the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. We understand how difficult this is for you the families we serve but the safety of everyone is our priority. We must play our part in the strict adherence to these instructions.
  • Only immediate family and close friends should attend the funeral.
  • No more than 50 people are permitted to attend the funeral service or be present at the graveside. Numbers allowed in Crematoria vary, your Funeral Arranger will be able to advise on exact numbers.
  • The numbers who may attend gatherings in our funeral homes is limited at this time. Again, your Funeral Arranger can advise you on the numbers as it depends on the size of the funeral home.
  • Face masks must be worn when entering our funeral homes. It is also recommended that they are worn in churches and crematoriums. When visiting our funeral homes for your safety, we ask that you provide your contact details for the benefit of track and trace.
  • Those in attendance will also need to follow social distancing guidelines. This means all funeral attendees must keep a distance of 2 metres apart.
  • Physical interactions including shaking hands and hugging must be avoided.
  • Those who are self-isolating or need to restrict their movements can not attend funerals.
  • Many of our churches have implemented streaming services so that family and friends can view the service from home. Please ask your Funeral arranger for details.
  • We encourage the wider family and friends of loved ones who have passed, to leave a message of condolence on our website www.masseybros/funeral-notices/

It is essential for the safety of everyone that we act wisely and adhere to these clear instructions from our Government.

From us all at Massey Bros we would like to sincerely thank you for your co-operation during these difficult times. #Staysafe

Ireland Remembers: Virtual memorial wall for loved ones

RTÉ is working with funeral directors around the country to curate a website that will allow families to pay tribute to and remember loved ones who have died during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The virtual memorial wall will be supported by special memorial segments on RTÉ One television and RTÉ Radio One.

Head of RTÉ Radio One Tom McGuire said the idea’s origin is the value that Irish society and culture places on the ritual of funerals.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Sean O’Rourke, Mr McGuire said family and friends will be able to submit a picture of their loved one and a caption with their name and address, which can then be accessed online.

“To imagine this at best would be to take you to Liberty Island, where we look at the name of emigrants to the United States.

“We will be able to click on the name of the deceased loved one open up their picture and caption, a little virtual shrine where you can light a candle in memory of the loved one. It will give society a chance to remember at a time when as a community we haven’t been able to come together,” he said.

This is an all-island project, Mr McGuire said, and contributions will also be welcome from families who have lost members to Covid-19 abroad.

He said there will be small moments during the day when presenters on RTÉ television and radio “will recite the names of some of the loved ones who have passed.”

When you see a hearse, what do you do?

A long-standing tradition in Ireland when a hearse passes has been to salute it in some way, as a mark of respect. Bowing your head, raising your hand to your heart or pausing in solitude, with a silent prayer on your lips for the person who has passed.

We ask you to help us reignite this very Irish tradition, in tribute to families who cannot give their loved ones the funeral they wish to. It would mean so very much in these particularly hard times for the families we care for. Please like and share our post far and wide. It all starts with one, will “you” be that one?

Thank you from all of us at Massey Bros
