Update on ease of Government restrictions on funeral services, as of Monday 6th September

Numbers attending funerals

From Monday 6th September 2021, all funeral venues (including churches, crematoria and other venues) can accommodate 50% of their usual capacity – this will, obviously, vary depending on the venue and our funeral directors will confirm exact capacities with the venues.

Reposings/Wakes

The 50% capacity rule also applies to funeral homes/chapels of repose. However, the Irish Association of Funeral Directors is advising its members to take a cautious approach to the re-introduction of public wakes at their premises. From a practical point of view, it may be difficult to manage the numbers attending a funeral home and to prevent an unsafe situation from developing. Families should consider continuing with private reposings for family only or by family invitation instead.

The following safety guidelines should continue to be followed;

  • Mask-wearing in all indoor settings
  • Physical distancing
  • No hand-shaking
  • No condolence books
  • Provision of hand sanitiser
  • Use of directional and safety signage
  • One-way systems in funeral homes where possible
  • Regular hand-washing, coughing & sneezing etiquette and surface sanitising

Ireland Remembers: Virtual memorial wall for loved ones

RTÉ is working with funeral directors around the country to curate a website that will allow families to pay tribute to and remember loved ones who have died during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The virtual memorial wall will be supported by special memorial segments on RTÉ One television and RTÉ Radio One.

Head of RTÉ Radio One Tom McGuire said the idea’s origin is the value that Irish society and culture places on the ritual of funerals.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Sean O’Rourke, Mr McGuire said family and friends will be able to submit a picture of their loved one and a caption with their name and address, which can then be accessed online.

“To imagine this at best would be to take you to Liberty Island, where we look at the name of emigrants to the United States.

“We will be able to click on the name of the deceased loved one open up their picture and caption, a little virtual shrine where you can light a candle in memory of the loved one. It will give society a chance to remember at a time when as a community we haven’t been able to come together,” he said.

This is an all-island project, Mr McGuire said, and contributions will also be welcome from families who have lost members to Covid-19 abroad.

He said there will be small moments during the day when presenters on RTÉ television and radio “will recite the names of some of the loved ones who have passed.”

When you see a hearse, what do you do?

A long-standing tradition in Ireland when a hearse passes has been to salute it in some way, as a mark of respect. Bowing your head, raising your hand to your heart or pausing in solitude, with a silent prayer on your lips for the person who has passed.

We ask you to help us reignite this very Irish tradition, in tribute to families who cannot give their loved ones the funeral they wish to. It would mean so very much in these particularly hard times for the families we care for. Please like and share our post far and wide. It all starts with one, will “you” be that one?

Thank you from all of us at Massey Bros

Funerals in the time of Covid-19 – as featured in the Irish Independent

“No crowds lined the paths, family members did not attend – the sad reality of not saying goodbye in the era of corona virus”

(Sunday Independent) Robert and Peter Maguire of Massey Bros walked together in solitude as we bade farewell to the “Colossus of the Liberties” the late John Gallagher.

It was our honour to accompany him as so many would have wished to. We too are brothers, sisters, sons, daughters Mother’s and Father’s. We can’t give you the funerals we know you want for your loved ones at this time, so we’ll be your family for now. We’ll continue to care for every single one of them.

A message from the Massey Bros family, relating to restrictions on ALL funeral services as a result of Covid19

In light of the current Covid-19 public health crisis, the Irish Government, The HSE, The Churches of Dublin, Cemeteries and Crematoria, have all issued instructions to Funeral Directors regarding ALL funeral services. These restrictions are being monitored daily and are subject to change.  The instructions are as follows:

All funeral services must be limited in numbers (less than 10) and are effectively strictly private. This means that services can only be attended by immediate family or by invitation of the family, whilst still adhering to the strict policy of 10 or less. We advise that you check with the individual suppliers on length of service and their particular guidelines as individuals may differ. Our staff will guide you via telephone please call 01 453 33 33 for clarification.

  • At these services and gatherings, there cannot be any shaking of hands, hugging or kissing. We understand this is extremely difficult for all families concerned, but we must adhere to these instructions for the benefit of everyone in the efforts to slow the spread of Covid19.
  • The wider family and friends of the deceased are encouraged to leave messages of condolence in the condolences section on the RIP.ie website.
  • Massey Bros intend on having “Ceremonies of Light” when we emerge from these dark days, in all of our parishes. We hope that may help bring some comfort to our families and an opportunity to honour their loved ones, in a way they would have wished to.

It is critical for everyone’s safety that we implement these clear instructions from our Government. We thank you in advance for your understanding and co-operation at this difficult time.
